Tammy is a Vietnamese immigrant who came to the United States in 2002. She moved to the U.S with her mother and father after her grandparents completed the path to citizenship, and sponsored the family. A Portland High School graduate, Tammy expressed that one of the hardest parts of transitioning to the U.S was learning English.  However, Portland High School has a very good English as a Second Language Program (ESL). With the help of the staff, Tammy was able to be a successful student despite initial language barriers.
Language continues to have its challenges in Tammy's family's lives. Her parents came to the United States at the same time as her, however, at age 40, learning another language is challenging. Tammy says that the biggest challenge that her parents face with the language barriers is translation at doctors appointments. Tammy will often go to the doctors with her parents, who prefer to not have a translator from outside the family due to the personal nature of doctor appointments.
